They are low pressure, relatively robust and can go for long periods of time. Problems typically include worn points and electromagnetic apparatus, failed gaskets and perished diaphragms. The ethanol content in modern fuels is thought to be destructive to the older rubber diaphragms. New ethanol-resistant diaphragms are available as are solid state SU pumps that recreate the look and function of the originals, but without mechanical points.

It is debated whether the old points-based systems are better because you can replace worn points, but when a solid state circuit fails you are stuck. Failure of the SU pump on an E-type Jaguar can be detected in a couple of ways.

jaguar e type s3 wiring diagram diagram base website wiring

First if you turn on the ignition, do not hear an initial set of clicks from the pump as it supplies fuel to the carb bowls and you have no fuel coming to the glass filter bowl you can suspect the pump. In this case sometimes a sharp tap on the pump body with a spanner or small hammer will free it up and get it working for limp-home use. Be careful though — it is quite likely the pump will fail quickly while you are driving, the car will stall and the consequences can be deadly if this happens in traffic.

Call a tow. In other cases when the SU pump fails you will hear continuous clicking that does not cease. If you are driving the car it will stall. You should shut the engine down immediately if the pump starts running on and on.

This can signal several potential problems. First, you have run out of gas and the pump will burn itself out sucking air. Second, you have some blockage in your fuel line feeding the pump. Again, turn off the ignition. Third, the rubber diaphragm may have perished and it no longer can move the fuel. Shut the ignition off. Finally, and potentially most dangerously, you have a leak at the pump gasket or along the lines, filter or carbs and you are pouring fuel out somewhere.

Shut the car off at once and determine where the fuel is leaking. This can be a huge fire hazard and potentially deadly. Sometimes leaving the car laid up can allow the float activated valves in the SU carb fuel bowls to seize open and overfill the bowls. The fuel will then pour out in the engine area. In some cases though the gasket on the SU fuel pump will fail and in the case of a Jaguar E-type Series II the fuel will then be pouring out at the rear of the car where the pump is located.

The good thing is that on Series II E-types replacing the SU fuel pump is very straight forward and the pump itself is readily available and not too expensive. You can rebuild the old points type pumps with new points, diaphragm and gaskets — but in terms of time versus cost it might be easier to buy a new unit. I am sure there is plenty of debate on how good the new replacement units are versus the original ones….

I figured on replacing it as a matter of course.During its 35 years history, John Skinner Manufacturing Limited have been manufacturing upholstery and interior trim parts for Classic Vintage Jaguar Sports Car after-market.

Jaguar XKE E-type Restoration: Removing and Replacing the SU Fuel Pump

If you continue to use this site we will assume that you are happy with it.The purpose of this checklist is to explain the operation of the fuel pump circuit and provide an easy-to-follow fault diagnosis procedure. The only tools needed are a 12 volt test light and a length of jumper wire. There are three main components to the system: the trunk-mounted, constant pressure electric fuel pump, a control relay, and a voltage directing diode pack. The system is so designed that the pump will operate when the starter motor is engaged and when the motor is actually running.

For testing or cold-start :priming", the pump may be operated by putting the transmssion into "drive" or "reverse" and turning the key to the start position. This activates the circuit but the starter itself does not engage. Twelve cylinder XJ12 cars, by the way, are wired differently.

The diode pack is mounted on the firewall and is easily identified by it's all-red color. The fuel pump relay is normally mounted right next to the diode pack but I've seen a couple of cars where the pump relay and the main relay have been flip-flopped.

So, pay attention or you may end up checking the wrong relay. Remove the connector socket from the fuel pump relay. You have now bypassed the control portion of the circuit and the pump should operate you can hear it easily of you remove the spare tire cover panel or, better yet, use a fuel pressure gauge. If the pump operates, go to Step 2. If it does not operate you have a wiring fault between the relay and the pump or a faulty fuel pump.

Trace out the fault or run a redundant ground. Voltage flows from the ignition switch and goes through the inertia switch. If there is voltage at the white wire, go to Step 5. Crank the engine and check for voltage at both terminals.

If there is no voltage at terminal 86 when cranking the engine, then go to Step 6. If no voltage the starter relay is faulty and not sending voltage downstream to the diode pack. If there is no voltage at terminal 3 when cranking then you have a wiring fault between the starter relay and the diode pack. If voltage goes is present at one side of the diode but not at the other, then the diode pack is faulty. Now, if voltage leaves the diode pack but terminal 86 of the fuel pump relay does not get any voltage then you have a wiring fault bewtween the diode pack and the pump relay.

I might add that, in some cases, the diode pack may have proper continuity but an internal fault can cause a voltage drop with a resultant problem downstream.

You'd need a voltmeter, not a test light, to properly check this. Its combination of beauty, high performance, and competitive pricing established the model as an icon of the motoring world. No ladder frame chassis, as was common at the time, was needed and as such the first cars weighed only kg lb.

On its release on 15 March [3] Enzo Ferrari called it "the most beautiful car ever made". Later model updates of the E-Type were officially designated "Series 2" and "Series 3", and over time the earlier cars have come to be referred to as "Series 1.

This is of more than academic interest, as Series 1 E-Types—and particularly Series 1 roadsters—often have values far in excess of Series 2 and 3 models. The Series 1 cars, which are by far the most valuable, essentially fall into two categories: Those made between andwhich had 3. Styling was unchanged.

As a result, the 4. Being a British-made car of the s, there are some rather rare sub-types of Series 1 E-Types, particularly at the beginning and end of the Series 1 production. For example, the first Series 1 cars had flat floors and external bonnet latches.

It is not known exactly how many of these Series 1 cars sometimes referred to as for convenience sake as "Series 1. Worldwide, including both left and right hand drive examples, a total of 7, 3.

While the Series 1. Of the "Series 1" cars, Jaguar manufactured some limited-edition variants, inspired by motor racing:. Safety and emissions regulations in the North American market resulted in Series 2 and 3 E-Types being fitted with a less attractive larger grille, wider wheel arches, and bigger bumpers. The New York City Museum of Modern Art recognised the significance of the E-Type's design in by adding a blue roadster to its permanent design collection, one of only six automobiles to receive the distinction.

After the company's success at the Le Mans 24 hr through the s, Jaguar's defunct racing department was given the brief to use D-Type style construction to build a road-going sports car, replacing the XK The first prototype E1A featured a monocoque design, Jaguar's fully independent rear suspension and the well proven " XK" engine.

The car was used solely for factory testing and was never formally released to the public. The car was eventually scrapped by the factory. Jaguar's second E-Type concept was E2A which, unlike the E1A, was constructed from a steel chassis with an aluminium body. This car was completed as a racing car as it was thought by Jaguar at the time it would provide a better testing ground.

E2A used a 3-litre version of the XK engine with a Lucas fuel injection system. After retiring from the Le Mans 24 hr the car was shipped to America to be used for racing by Jaguar privateer Briggs Cunningham. Inthe car returned to Jaguar in England to be used as a test vehicle. Ownership of E2A passed to Roger Woodley Jaguar's customer competition car manager who took possession on the basis the car not be used for racing.

E2A had been scheduled to be scrapped. Jaguar unveiled a modern revival of the E-Type series 1. The electric motor replaces the original transmission. In AugustJaguar confirmed it will offer all-electric E-Types for sale starting in summer The Series 1 was introduced, initially for export only, in March The domestic market launch came four months later in July Earlier built cars utilised external bonnet latches which required a tool to open and had a flat floor design.

These cars are rare and more valuable. After that, the floors were dished to provide more leg room and the twin bonnet latches moved to inside the car. The 3. The 4. That all meant better throttle response for drivers that did not want to shift down gears.Experience in a Book Electrical System.

The diagrams are laminated in plastic and color coded to match the actual wiring. The supplier is:. They stated they have the license to sell copies of the Jaguar wiring diagrams. In later years they apparently have diagrams for each year.

They assured me that these were not the wiring diagrams in the owners manual, Haynes, etc. Regarding these wiring diagrams, Mike Wilson says, "They now come with a Supplement that includes corrections for the following:. Illumination of the air conditioning control panel is via a single light bulb in a housing in the console, with the light carried by fibers to the various locations. This makes the whole panel dark with a single bulb failure, but it's a cinch to replace the bulb; just remove the top cover of the console 3 screws and replace the bulb inside the housing.

Don't cut those fibers; they're not easy to splice. They are a little brittle, so don't bend them too sharply either. They tend to get in the way when working on the radio, so be careful. If you need to disconnect one from the fixture at either end, don't just yank. Insert a tiny screwdriver into the slot along the side of the socket and twist to spread it a little, and the fiber will come out easily.

It has a little brass fitting on it with a lip. To put it back, simply press it in until it clicks. Note that the sockets on the bulb housing are not all the same. If you open it up and look inside, you will note that some of the sockets feature a colored filter. Which socket used will determine what color light comes out the end of the fiber. This should give a very smooth cut. You need to butt the two fibers together while you epoxy them in that position.

A "V-groove" works well. If you come up with a means of clamping the two fibers together mechanically, index match grease between the ends helps to decrease the loss. Silicone grease, clear, works well. Vaseline is not bad either. You can also get genuine Jaguar fibers from several mail order outfits, but they aren't cheap. When troubleshooting, it is important to be able to eliminate a previously-made splice as a possible fault. First, it is helpful to have a pair of wire-stripping pliers around -- a good pair.

A good wire stripper will remove insulation from the tip of a wire neatly, doing much less damage to the conductors than you can do with a razor blade, or your teeth, or whatever. However, a cheap wire stripper, especially one in which the stripping slots don't line up properly or are not sharp enough, can cut half the copper strands while removing the insulation.
